Donald Trump marketing


No matter how much you love or hate the 45th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump; either way you must respect the man’s ability to promote himself. I’ve often heard that the difference between marketing and public relations is that public relations is more about branding and marketing is about direct revenue. I believe Trump’s successes is due largely to his branding, legal team, and social media engagement.

Branding

First, Trump has licensed his name for various real estate properties, apparel, and home furnishing. To the average person, this sounds crazy, but Trump licensing has created a sense of ownership for the respect that the names carries. Some of his properties were in Las Vegas, Toronto, Dubai, and Honolulu. According to an analysis by The Washington Post, there are more than fifty licensing or management deals involving Trump's name, which have generated at least $59 million in yearly revenue for his companies. What this means is that Trump is making money simply because someone is using his family name.

Legal

Secondly, even though Trump and his business has been involved in more than 4,000 legal actions, his has successfully marketed himself as successful businessman. If you dive into the numbers, his was the plaintiff (one doing the suing) in over 1,900 cases. On the other hand, he was defendant in over 1,450 cases. Most of the plaintiff cases was Trump suing gamblers not paying debt. While on the defense, Trump was sued for personal injury claims. His success rate was 451 to 38.
Most interesting, Trump has never filed for personal bankruptcy. However, Trumps hotel and casino businesses have been declared bankrupt six times between 1991 and 2009. Because the businesses used Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they could operate while negotiations proceeded.

Social media

As of May 2019, Trump is in the top 15 for most Twitter followers at more than 60 million which shows that the social media community has changed. If you would asked 4 years ago if a sitting president would be posting on social media, the answer would be ‘no.’ There would have been tons of legal analysis and blog posts stating the rationale for a President to not engage However, in 2020, despite impeachment hearings, Trump is posting regularly.
All in all, Trump has successfully won the Presidential election despite personal and financial woes. I think that has a large part to do with his branding, legal team, and social media engagement. Please don’t this post as a support of Trump, but as a different view of 45th President of the United States of America.
