Why observation is important?

Observation is important because it tells you about the people around, your current situation, and possible opportunities for growth.

Think about it! How many times have you realized that someone is not good for you? The company you work for does not plan on promoting you. Or the high number of opportunities that have passed you by just because you were not paying attention to your environment or those around you.

Simply put, observation is one of the major tools that any successful person can use. Sometimes, others may consider observant people as shy, reserved, or uninvolved. However, these are the people you might want on your team.

People who are very observant, are the same people who will have your back when others are dragging your name through the mud. These are the same people who when they speak everyone listen. For what it is worth, these people can be considered the analytical people on the team.
I like to call these individuals, The Oracle. A fictional character in the film The Matrix, who was ‘a prophet who still resides in the Matrix, helping the freed humans with her foresight and wisdom.’ Observant people obtain all of type of foresight and wisdom by watching others. They watch other’s behavior, personalities, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

So if you are about put a team together and you need information about your competitor, direct supervisor, funding organization, or jury when putting on a case as a lawyer; who would you want on the team that can provide intel? The answer might seem simple now, but in the mist of making money and the ‘back and forth’ with opposing counsel, we often leave this people out of key decision-making opportunities. However, these are the very same people who can take your team to the next level because of their tremendous insight and ability to sit quiet while observing variables around them.

My suggestion is to find two individuals who might not speak the Queen’s English, might not be the smartest in the room, or does not have charm; but they have collected tons of data about human beings, organizational processes, and potential opportunities for growth.

Takeaways:

The observant person does not need to be overlooked. They need to be given opportunities to showcase their abilities for the greater good. In future, when you see someone in the corner at the Christmas Party, take a moment to reach out to them because you might find that they can help you more than you know.
