Power of Story Telling
The power of story telling can be
dated by years and years even before verbal communication. Well I’m not going to say language but before
a lot of technology. The reason why story telling became such a powerful tool
is because a lot of people could not read or write. And some of life’s principles,
life lessons and morals could only be taught through story telling. Story
telling teaches so many different levels of variable that a simple arithmetic or
demanding person will ever be able to convey.
Story
telling is essential, regarding law, organizational development, investing,
business. Primarily, those who may not have come from much, story telling is
how you learn to be better. Role modeling, mentorship, and coaching is done
through story telling.
Whether
it is real life experiences or hypotheticals, storytelling helps communicate difficult
learning lessons.
It’s
a reason why movies, reality television, Netflix, etc. are so popular. All of
these modes convey some type of story that viewers want to watch. Some of the
good stories, leave you with some type of moral compass or call of action.
Those moral principles can be that the good guy always wins; the ups and downs
of what somebody went through to become a successful millionaire; or try to
teach you to eat better like “What the Health.”
I’ve
started employing story telling into speeches, writings, and posts because it’s
more effective. When you hit people with direct call-to-action’s the audience
just glaze over. And the audience might view the content as just another lawyer
or investor saying the same thing.
When crafting a story, you tell
people how you got to where you are; how you managed different clients; and how
you managed this deal. You pull back the curtains of what you do, and people become
interested. People love to see evolution, growth, and ‘ups and downs.’
Of course, you will have the trolls,
the people that feel like they have some negative things to say about anything
you do. Well, that's life but, you never want to not tell your story “We all
have a story.” (This was a infamous saying by law school professor, James D.
Love). Professor Love believed that just because everyone has a story doesn’t
give you an excuse to not be prepared and on time. And he was correct, everyone
has a story and be prepared to share it; but at the same time be prepared and
on-time.
One
has to be willing to craft a meaning story while engaging others. Whether you
are selling a product or service, you have to be able to convey a story in a
manner that the audience will want to pay attention. You’ll be surprised that you
don't have to create something out of the ordinary. Take your life story, craft
it in a simple manner and you will be surprised that there is a world out there
waiting to listen.
