Embracing uncertainty

For the majority part of my life, I’ve strived for comfortability. And if I was a gambling man, there is a lot of other people that are wanting everything to be comfortable too.

For some reason, there was something implanted in our brains that if we work hard enough, everything is going to be smooth at some point in our life. That is the furthest from the truth. I’m not saying that your life is going to be horrible, but it isn’t going to be perfect.

Life is all about how you mold yourself to handle what life throws at you. One of my favorite quotes is from the Rocky (2006) [what can I say, I like movies]:

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you, no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, you ain't gonna have a life. Don't forget to visit your mother.”

I listen to this every time I’m running on the treadmill. The way I grew up wasn’t the worst, so I’m thankful for opportunities my mom and dad afforded me. My life wasn’t as great as those who I attended school with. I could have looked at life as my mom didn’t graduate college, my dad wasn’t living with me in my home, etc. However, I became more successful when I harness the power that mom took care of me, my dad provided for us where he could, etc. Depending on who is telling the story, you outlook on life is different. And based on your outlook, your success level will be determined by such.

What does all this have to do with embracing uncertainty? For a long period of time, I hated how my life started because there wasn’t any certainty of bills being paid, formal stability in the home, etc. Then I realized that life is full of uncertainty, but that doesn’t stop you from looking at the great opportunities in life you have. And you can capitalize on these opportunities.
