S.M.A.R.T. versus D.U.M.B. goals

Learned earlier last week there are a such things as DUMB goals. I’ve heard of SMART goals. But, DUMB is a new one for me. For those who don’t know either D.U.M.B. or S.M.A.R.T. (E.R.) goals please read below:

The S.M.A.R.T.  goal acronym was developed to help individuals select specific goals that are achievable. And D.U.M.B. goals are more focused on the person’s purpose.

To be more specific, S.M.A.R.T. goals are listed below:

Specific (simple, sensible, significant);
Measurable (meaningful, motivating);
Achievable (agreed, attainable);
Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based); and
Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).

Other researchers (including myself) suggest you the next two:

Evaluate; and
Review.

I’ve always respected the S.M.A.R.T. goal theory as it provides the individual of structure in direction and goal achievement. On the other hand, D.U.M.B. goals seem to be more fitting for the purpose-driven individual. More specifically, D.U.M.B. goals are listed below:

Dream-Driven;
Uplifting;
Method-Friendly; and
Behavior-Driven.

All in all, it doesn’t matter which method one uses to develop and achieve goals, if you do it. I’m a fan of both as each serves a different purpose. From the outside looking in, S.M.A.R.T. goals are for corporate organizations with large teams with big projects. D.U.M.B. goals are for creative and small organizations. I’m not saying you can apply either one to large corporations or small creative ones.

The main purpose of this blog is to help move individuals to the next level in life regardless of their career field and social economic status. Employing either one of these methods is about improving you, the reader.
