True Life Goals

Most of the time people talk about goals, either short-term, S.M.A.R.T., or D.U.M.B. goals.
As I’m a fan of having goals for every stage of your life; it is important to focus on ultimate True-Life Goals. Meaning, obtaining a college degree, making six-figures annually, getting married are all great goals. But we need to understand the purpose of those goals. Sometimes we can get caught up in achieving and forget the reasoning for striving towards goals in the first place. For example, one of my life flaws was when I graduated with my bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. When I was attending the institution, I was making horrible grades because my ultimate goals were to make a lot of money. And at the time, that was to become an engineer. However, I wasn’t as passionate about engineering as I was psychology. So, the low level of interest was the reason for my low grades. But, as soon as I switched my major to psychology, my grades drastically improved.

When we talk about true-life goals, I think it is important to look at exactly what that means to us. True life goals for me is when all your ancillary or secondary goals align with your overall life purpose.

All our small goals need to align with our large goals. If you aren’t aligning your goals with each other, you are missing out tremendously, meaning you are missing out on the whole meaning, fabric and marrow of life.

Now when I am talking about true-life goals, I’m not talking about S.M.A.R.T., D.U.M.B., etc. I’m talking about what are you placed on this world to do? A lot of people don’t answer that question. It is sad because you have a lot of adults live day-in and day-out without any guidance. Some are acting out life because that’s what they were told to do by parents, supervisors and friend. Or they never believed to break out of the Groupthink or cycle to try do anything more.

A true-life goal is your WHY. What drives you? What motivates you to get up in the morning to go to the office? A true-life goal gives you a reason for being. I’m not talking about motivation, inspiration, Tony Robbins, etc. [And I love Tony Robbins.] I love motivation. I listen to motivational podcast every day of the week.  Listening to podcast is one of the many ways I keep myself tuned-up in life.
So, what are you truly doing to further your life? What are you here on this earth to do? What do you want to do? Maybe it’s a contribution to society to end world hunger. There is a tremendous WHY out there for everyone.

One of the reasons I preach this so much is because I see a lot of miserable and negative people around. And their negativity drawn from you.

My undergraduate studies were focused in psychology and I ask myself ‘why’ a lot in the past. Why do others kill? Why do we have world hunger?  I used to be one of those people. It took mentors, business partners, and others to get me out of the ‘broken record’ thinking. And I feel like I want to give the helping hand that was given to me to the world.

You often hear the story about the dash on the tombstone: the day you are born through the day you die. What do you want to leave to the world, kids, siblings, parents, job, corporations, dogs, investors, etc.? We all live in this ecosystem and we can choose to (a) give into it or (b) take away.

So where short-term goals, S.M.A.R.T. goals, D.U.M.B. goals are all in important. I employ these myself. Let’s remember that all those plans, strategies and goals should all fit into an overall true-life goal.
