Can Self Discipline be learned?
Yes, self-discipline can be learned, but only if you are
true to yourself. Self-Discipline is the annoying sister of success. We often
hear that to be success you must tame your own desires to achieve goals. This is
so true.
I do believe that self-discipline does not have to be to an arduous
task. If you keep your goals in front of you and find out what is keeping you
from achieving your goals; then self-discipline is your friend. Better yet,
self-discipline can become a game that only can win and play.
We all have been guilty of blaming others for our own failures,
missed opportunities, or others moving up in this world. But rarely do we take
the blame onto ourselves. Self-discipline is the manipulation of your actions
to achieve goals.
Yes, this seems simple, but what about your New Year’s Goals
are wanting exercise more, eat less, save more, etc. But, in the middle of
February, you’ve stop attending the gym, COVID-19 hits, and you spend more
money on Amazon shopping. We all have been there. But the choice to stay there
is on you.
What often separates the Greats from the Good, is the
systematic changes over time. I’m often asked how I am able to achieve so much
in a certain amount of time, e.g., Ph.D., Law License, etc. The answer is remarkably
simple, it is the small daily wins every day. Working on myself no matter how
small.
On the flip side, there are a ton of bad habits that I have
that no matter how much I try, I still must deal with. For example, working
out, following-up with small projects, etc.
The key to self-discipline is not trying to be perfect, but
excellent. The difference between the two are significant. Perfect is being
without blemish or fault. Excellence is being better today than yesterday. And this
is what self-discipline is about. It is about the development of yourself regardless
of what others say or do to you.
Self-discipline is a lifelong journey. But, leaving ‘self-discipline’
unchecked can lead to a life of disheartening trials and tribulation. So, it is
important to know you do have faults while working on yourself. The beauty of
self-discipline is that you can have fun with it because you are becoming a
better person without sacrificing who you are on the inside. Meaning, when you are
working on yourself, you become in tune with who you want to be rather who
others want you to be. So, you do not have to worry about appeasing others.
Takeaways:
Self-discipline is about being a better version of yourself.
It is not narcissism or being self-absorbed. It is about knowing you can be
better person and that in turn will make your life better as well as those
around too.
