Believing in yourself

I know this sounds small, but for you to be successful in anything you must believe in yourself. When I think about all my struggles, I realized that it was me believing in myself that got me through.

I am always asked ‘what it took for you to be successful.’ The answer is “I had to believe in myself.” And I know for a lot of people that might be hard to do. With family members, friends, and colleagues saying that you cannot do something. And I get it.

There are a lot of times when you are trying to do something outside the norm and other people do not understand it. They will discourage you. Sometimes they are doing it because they just do not like you. Sometimes they do it because they are simply scared for you and they do not want you to get hurt.

Think about how many times we talk to our kids and we see them fall time and time again. And as parents, we want them to succeed. But we see that it hurts them. We see them crying. We see their frustration. But we do not want them to just stop there. We do not tell our kids to stop trying to walk because they are hurting, or they are crying. What we do is keep helping and pushing them. We keep motivating them.

So, we as individuals must learn how to believe in ourselves. How to encourage positive self-talk. 90% of the conversations you have is with yourself.

How many times have talked to yourself whether quietly or verbally? But how often do you ask yourself, ‘what am I talking about?’

I think it is especially important that you start asking ourselves what is it that we really want to do. And how can we achieve it. A great theologian Rev. Ike said it best, figure what you want, then figure out how later. Just start doing.

In traditional education system, we are often taught to have some type of game plan. Whether there is a course curriculum, degree program, or counselor advisor. But life does not always provide those programs, course outlines, or next steps.

You might have books or YouTube videos to tell you how to raise a kid and how to start a business. But ultimately, in the grand scheme of life, there is no set program that you follow. Everyone is different.

Long story short, you must believe in yourself when navigating those YouTube videos, books, and podcasts.

Joyce Meyers says it best, ‘think about what you are thinking about.’ So here are a few ways to start believing in yourself: (1) control your thinking, (2) listen to audio and watch videos that motivate you, and (3) reward yourself for the small wins.

Takeaways:

Believing in yourself takes intentionality. You have 90% of the conversations you will ever have in life with YOURSELF. Make sure it is good, positive, and growth conversations.
