Life Lessons learned from Cinema

There is always someone who is in need? There is always a guide? And there is this immense obstacle that the main character must overcome.

It is amazing to me that so many people get caught up in binge watching movies and television shows on Netflix, Hulu, etc. But I am not too amazed because I have been one of those people.

Why is it that television can be so addictive? I think the answer is simple:  It allows you to not focus on the realities of life and you can learn something from them to apply in everyday life.

How many times have you watched a romantic comedy and see the result of the story 5 minutes into the movie? Guy meets girl. Guy does something stupid against the girl. Then he suddenly realizes that she is the one for him and, just in the nick of time, he gets the girl before she gets onto a plane to head out of the country.

But I find that there are many life lessons that are taught in movies. For example, The Notebook, played with Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. The story is simple that McAdams falls for Gosling during one of her summer visitations to the south and falls in love with each other. Gosling must fight for his love before that get married until the end of their life.  Gosling is still fighting for her as she has memory issues. Gosling reads to his wife about their life together to help jog her memory.

The moral of the story is that when you love someone, you continue to fight for them until the day you die. I think this might be the reason why Marriage Vows says, ‘till death do us part.’

So, if we are going to watch Housewives of Los Angeles or the latest Marvel’s Avengers movies; we might as well take some lessons from them.

I have come to learn several points from cinema: (1) good always win; (2) if you are lost, there is always a guide; and (3) the issue is rarely the issue.

You often hear that ‘the good guy finishes last.’ This is the furthest from the truth. The good guys seem to be losing, but they are winning. If they do not get the girl, it is because she was the wrong one. If he does not close the business deal, it is because the deal was not worth it.

Secondly, if you are lost, there is always a guide. We all have lost our way in life. But there is someone who guides us to the right decisions. Whether it is a high school guidance counselor, academic advisor in college, mentor, or pastor; there is always someone there to help point you in the right direction.

Lastly, the apparent obstacles that you think that you must overcome, is not the focal issue.  Meaning, sometimes we create problems out of thin air. If you want to purchase a home, you think that you do not have enough money or credit score. If you want to become a millionaire, you think it is your job. But you must learn to focus on the issue to get you to the next step in life, not what you think it may be.

Takeaways:

Life lessons from TV:  (1) the good guys always win; (2) always find mentor/counselor to help your life; and (3) focus on the issue that will help you get to the next level.
