Being Honest with Your Lawyer

I know you think this might sounds like common sense, but a lot of people don’t understand the importance of being honest with their lawyer.

Honesty with the right people is important. If you can’t be honest with your lawyer, then who can you be honest with.

So why is it important to be honest with your lawyer?

1.       The lawyer needs to understand where to start

2.       You don’t want anything unexpecting to come out in court

I know this sounds simple, but please know that we all have our own faults. A lawyer is to advocate for you even in your worst situation. And the lawyer has probably heard worst.

Now, I’m not saying that you need to tell every last detail. But, there are some details that every lawyer needs to know about their client. There are certain aspects that a lawyer must report. For example, if a client is going to cause injury towards themselves or others, the lawyer has to notify authorities.

I’ve said before that there needs to be a level of transparency within certain relationships. This isn’t a green light to tell everyone your business; however, if a person you are close with doesn’t know what’s going on in your life, they can’t offer any help.

There is a thin line between being honest and divulging too much information. My test to make sure that I’m honest while operating at a high level of privacy ‘is what I’m about to say add value to the conversation, me, or the other person I’m talking to.’ Yes, it is that simple! When ever you are in a conversation, having a meeting, or working any project; ask yourself ‘is this adding value?’

When it comes to a legal relationship between a client and lawyer, honesty works both ways. You don’t want a client who isn’t truthful. On the other hand, you don’t want a lawyer who is telling you what you want to hear without any regard to the possible negative future.
